Possible Changes to Federal Red Snapper Season
Friday, June 09, 2017 @ 13:32:39 EDT

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is seeking input from the public regarding the possibility of extending the federal recreational red snapper season. The options being considered would allow recreational anglers to fish for red snapper in federal waters on additional weekend days in the summer of 2017.

More Information:

TPWD seeks the public’s input on the different options being proposed to extend the federal red snapper season. After a three-day red snapper season this summer, discussions developed between the five Gulf States and the United States Department of Commerce to extend the federal recreational angler red snapper season. Two different frameworks are being considered that would add additional fishing days during the peak red snapper season as well as address the concerns of recreational anglers disappointed in the short federal season.

The two options being considered are below.

2-day weekend – This framework would establish 27 weekend days in summer 2017 for red snapper fishing in state and federal waters beginning Saturday June 17 and running through the first weekend in September.  The open days each week would be Saturday and Sunday, with additional open days on Monday July 3, Tuesday July 4, and Monday September 4.  Red snapper harvest would be closed in state and federal waters Monday through Friday each week, for the duration of 2017 with the exception of July 3, 4, and September 4.

3-day weekend – This framework would establish 39 weekend days in summer 2017 for red snapper fishing in state and federal waters beginning Friday June 16 and running through the first weekend in September.  The open days each week would be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with additional open days on Monday July 3, Tuesday July 4, and Monday September 4.  Red snapper harvest would be closed in state and federal waters Monday through Thursday each week, for the duration of 2017 with the exception of July 3, 4, and September 4.
At this time TPWD believes Framework 1 would not require additional fall season days to close, but Framework 2 would require some or all of the fall season to be closed.
