That average weight increased to 4.07 pounds in 2008 and jumped to 5 pounds this past year, he said.

“The good news is that fishermen are catching bigger snapper and catching them at a faster pace,” Riechers said. “The down side is that it takes fewer snapper and fewer days for them to reach their annual allowable catch.”

The combination of 2009's “over-run” of the recreational catch quota and the heavier average weight of snapper means a shorter 2010 season.

Chances of major changes in red snapper regulations — appreciably increasing season length, liberalizing bag limit, dividing the recreational ACL between the for-hire sector (charter boats, head boats) and private-boat anglers — are slim over the coming couple of years, at least.

Major changes in red snapper regulations typically are associated with new or updated stock assessments such as the one just completed.

By the way, the next updated red snapper stock assessment is tentatively scheduled for 2013.

Although a final decision from the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service will not come until late April or early May, fisheries managers this past week said the 2010 recreational red snapper season, set to open June 1, likely will run for just 51-60 days.
